How to add a Generic record

The following types of Generic records are available: A, AAAA, A6, AFSDB, APL, CAA, CERT, DHCID, DNAME, DS, IPSECKEY, ISDN, KEY, KX, LOC, MB, MG, MINFO, MR, NS, NSAP, PTR, PX, RP, RT, SINK, SPF, SSHFP, TLSA, WKS, and X25.
Note: The primary method for creating A/AAAA records in Address Manager is by adding a host record and linking it to an IP address.
Note: The A6 record type has been moved to Historic status per RFC 6563, and is planned for removal in a future release.
Note: The primary method for creating PTR records is by selecting the Reverse Record check box during host record creation and configuring necessary deployment roles. PTR records for unmanaged external hosts can also be created as part of the IP assignment process.

To add a generic record:

  1. From the configuration drop-down menu, select a configuration.
  2. Select the DNS tab. Tabs remember the page you last worked on, so select the tab again to ensure you're on the Configuration information page.
  3. Under DNS Views, click a DNS view.
  4. Under Top Level Domains, navigate to the top level domain, DNS zone, or DNS sub-zone where you want to add or edit a resource record.
  5. Click the Resource Records tab.
  6. Under Resource Records, click New and select Generic Record.
  7. Under General, set the following parameters:
    • Name—to specify a name for the generic record, select this option and enter a name.
      Note: If adding a TLSA record, the name of the TLSA record must use the following syntax: _<portnumber>._<protocol>.<FQDN>. For example:
      _443._tcp.www.example.com
    • Same as Zone—to use the zone name for the name of the generic record, select this option.
      Attention: If adding a TLSA record, Address Manager only validates the TLSA record data not the name. However, BlueCat strongly recommends NOT selecting the Same as Zone radio button and instead entering a new name for the TLSA record in the Name field using the correct syntax.

    • Type—select a resource record type from the drop-down menu. Available types include A6, AFSDB, APL, CAA, CERT, DHCID, DNAME, DS, IPSECKEY, ISDN, KEY, KX, LOC, MB, MG, MINFO, MR, NS, NSAP, PTR, PX, RP, RT, SINK, SPF, SSHFP, TLSA, WKS, and X25
    • Data—enter a value that meets the requirements of the selected resource record type.
    • Override TTL—to change the time-to-live value for the record, select this option and enter a value in the field. Select a unit of time from the drop-down menu.
  8. Under Additional Information, enter notes describing the resource record in the Comments field.
  9. Under Change Control, add comments, if required.
  10. Click Add or click Add Next.
