Create and assign a new IPv6 address to allocate the address to a host, or reserve the address for future DHCP allocation.
Unlike addresses in the IPv4 space, IPv6 addresses don't automatically appear when you create an IPv6 network. By default, networks contain a single Network Router Anycast address. You can't change the Network Router Anycast address or its properties.
Note: In previous versions of Address Manager, creating a new IPv6 address would create
an address in an unassigned state by default. In Address Manager v25.1.0, creating a
new IPv6 address will create an address in a static state by default.
To create and assign an IPv6 address:
- Select the IPAM tab in the sidebar, then select IPv6 blocks.
- Select the 2000::/3 (Global Unicast Address Space) range, or the fc00::/6 (Unique Local Address Space) range.
- Navigate to the IPv6 network that will contain the IPv6 addresses you want to create by selecting the network's range in the IPv6 blocks and networks table, or by selecting the network in the IPAM tree view panel.
- Select New.
-
Under General, set the following parameters:
- Address—manually enter the IPv6 address to create, if you are not using a MAC address to dynamically create the address.
-
Allocation type—select the state to assign the IPv6 address from
the following options. For more information, refer to IP address allocation types.
- Static—select this option to assign the IP address to a particular host.
- DHCP reserved—select this allocation type to reserve the
address for the DHCP service. If you have selected DHCP
reserved, the Reserved by field appears.
- Reserved by—select the reservation method, either Client DUID or MAC address. You must enter a value for the selected method to assign the IPv6 address.
- Client DUID—enter the DHCP Unique Identifier.
-
MAC address— enter the MAC address for the IP address in the
format nnnnnnnnnnnn, nn-nn-nn-nn-nn-nn, or
nn:nn:nn:nn:nn:nn, where nn is a hexadecimal value
from 00 to FF.
- If you are not entering an IPv6 address and instead using the MAC address to dynamically create the address,Address Manager automatically formats the MAC address using Extended Unique Identifier (EUI) format by inserting the hex characters FFFE in the middle of the MAC address and inverting the seventh bit in the address. For example, if you enter a MAC address of 11:22:33:44:55:66 as the basis for the interface ID, and click Add, Address Manager changes it into 1322:33FF:FE44:5566.
- If you select Interface ID, you must enter the interface portion of the address.
-
Hostname—select from the following options:
- Same as zone—select this option to give the host the same name as the zone.
- Specify name—enter the name for the host record assignment.
- Reverse record—select the checkbox to create a reverse record for the host.
- Assign to MAC pool (DHCP reserved only)—select the checkbox, then select a MAC pool from the drop-down menu to link the MAC address to a pool. Users will only see the MAC pool to which they have view access rights.
- Location—select a location from the drop-down menu to associate the IP address to a location.
- IP address name—enter a descriptive name for the IP address.
- On the DNS tab, enter the view or views to which the IP address is to be assigned.
-
On the PTR records tab, set the following options:
- View—select a view from the drop-down menu to
specify the DNS view from which you want to select external host
records or to which you want to add external host records.
- Use existing unmanaged host—select this option to link a PTR record to existing external host records in the selected view. Enter a the name of an external host record in the Select unmanaged host field and select Add PTR record.
- Create a new unmanaged host—select this option to create a new external host record in the selected view and link a PTR record to it. Enter the fully qualified domain name in the Unmanaged host name field and select Add PTR record.
- You can add multiple external host records from different views. External host records that are already linked will be displayed.
- To remove an external host record, select the Remove button beside the external host record.
- View—select a view from the drop-down menu to
specify the DNS view from which you want to select external host
records or to which you want to add external host records.
-
In the Device section, associate the address with a
new or existing device. The Device section may not be
editable if you don't have the associated access rights.
- Select existing device—select this option if you have already defined devices on the Devices page. Enter the name of the device in the Device field.
- New device—select this option to create a new device. In the Device name field, enter a descriptive name for the device.
- In the Change control section, add comments if required.
- Select Create or Create and add another.
