The Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) allows a polling workstation or trap server to obtain data about devices on the network. This may include the almost real-time status of services, server functionality, and the security and service settings on the device. Address Manager DNS/DHCP Serverappliances can behave as managed devices on an SNMP- enabled network. Address Manager DNS/DHCP Serverincludes SNMP for both the appliance itself and for the on board application server.

Address Manager DNS/DHCP Server includes support for SNMP versions 1, 2c, and 3. Versions 1 and 2c do not include any authentication or remote administration capabilities. This means that you only need to enable SNMP and set the appropriate SNMP username (or community string) for it to function correctly. You can also set the polling period to control how often SNMP values are refreshed on the appliance. SNMPv3 includes authentication and access control. To set up SNMPv3, you must also set the SNMP password and the Trap Server username, password, and address. Version 3 has the ability to send information as SNMP traps.
Note: If you are using an BlueCat DNS/DHCP Server appliance to manage your DNS/DHCP Server, you must set the same versions of SNMP on the Address Manager Monitoring service and on the managed DNS/DHCP Server. Mismatched SNMP versions cause a Failed to connect status message to appear in Address Manager.
Note: New DNS/DHCP Server and Address Manager appliances both default to SNMP v2c. You need to take this into consideration when you add or replace an appliance, or if you install a software update.

When you first install a Address Manager DNS/DHCP Server or appliance, the SNMP service is not configured. You need to configure the SNMP parameters before you enable the SNMP service. For details on enabling SNMP, refer to Enabling SNMP Trap Service.
