How CDV deletes Address Manager resources associated with Terminated Discovery jobs, Schedules, and Visibility Managers - BlueCat Integrity - 26.1.0

Users can choose to terminate a Scheduled job, a Visibility Management job, or a deactivated discovery job.

A discovery job is deactivated when a user deletes an AWS account, an Azure resource group or subscription, or a GCP project from the cloud. It is also deactivated if the AWS account filter is updated to remove an AWS account. In such cases, CD&V changes the job status to "deactivated".

By default, when a deactivated Discovery job, a Scheduled job, or a Visibility Management job is terminated, its resources are deleted in CDV, but retained in Address Manager. At termination time, you can instead choose to have CDV also delete (or tag for deletion) the associated resources from Address Manager.

When doing so, CDV will only delete resources from Address Manager that it can confirm are not used by other Configurations. Others are merely tagged for deletion. When the termination process completes, you can go to the Tagged Resources page to manually check and complete deletion of the tagged items.

The specific process that CDV uses to delete resources depends on what is being terminated:

Terminating a deactivated Discovery job and removing its resources

When a deactivated Discovery job is being Terminated and you choose to let CDV delete its resources, CDV does the following:

  1. Delete any associated Visibility jobs: If the Discovery job has an associated Visibility job, the Visibility job is deleted.

  2. If the discovery job uses Default or Custom configuration mode: CDV tags the job's Configurations and the contents of those Configurations for deletion in Address Manager. If all Configurations and their resources are successfully tagged for deletion, the discovery job is automatically deleted from CDV. If an error occurs during the tagging operation, the discovery is kept in CDV.

  3. If the discovery uses a Combined configuration mode: CDV deletes Address Manager Configurations as follows:

    1. Within Address Manager, CDV tags for deletion Configurations that overlap or that are generated by the Kubernetes clusters.

    2. Within Address Manager, CDV deletes resources within the Discovery job's other Configurations.

      Since non-overlapping and non-Kubernetes Configurations might be used by another CDV Discovery job, CDV tags only the resources it contains for deletion (not the Configuration itself). Resources are tagged in Address Manager as follows:

      1. CDV tags networks for deletion and keeps blocks.

      2. CDV tags all devices for deletion.

      3. CDV tags all records for deletion.

      4. CDV tags zones that are empty for deletion.

      Note: CDV does not delete views.

  4. If all impacted resources were successfully deleted or tagged for deletion: The job is removed from CDV.

    If the process resulted in an error: The job will not be removed from CDV. Within the Management page, the job will be flagged as Terminated with issues.

You can now confirm the final deletion of the tagged items. To do so, go to the Tagged Resources page.

When a Schedule Manager is being Terminated

When a Schedule Manager is being Terminated and you choose to let CDV delete its resources, CDV does the following:

  1. Delete the Schedule Manager's discovery jobs: CDV will delete all discovery jobs in the Schedule Manager one by one, following the procedure described in When a Discovery job is being Terminated.

  2. If all of the Schedule Manager's Discovery jobs were successfully deleted (with all resources successfully deleted or tagged for deletion): The Schedule Manager is removed from CDV.

    If the process resulted in an error: The Schedule Manager will not be removed from CDV.

When a Visibility Manager is being Terminated

When a Visibility Manager is being Terminated and you choose to let CDV delete its resources, CDV does the following:

  1. Delete the Visibility Manager's discovery and visibility jobs: CDV will delete all discovery and visibility jobs in the Visibility Manager one by one, following the procedure described in When a Discovery job is being Terminated.

  2. If all of the jobs in the Visibility Manager were successfully deleted (with all resources successfully deleted or tagged for deletion): The Visibility Manager is removed from CDV.

    If the process resulted in an error: The Visibility Manager will not be removed from CDV.
