Set a forwarding DNS deployment option by providing a list of server IP addresses that are designed as forwarders.

A Forwarding DNS deployment option affects delegation to sub zones for which a server isn't authoritative. The DNS forwarding behavior varies based on the level at which this option is set:
  • Server, server group, or view level—if an incoming query matches a view that allows recursive queries, and the server is not authoritative for the query, then the query will be forwarded to one of the IP addresses specified when defining the deployment option. This is DNS forwarding.
  • Zone, block, or network (IPv4 and IPv6) level—if an incoming query matches the zone or IP address, then the query is forwarded to one of the IP addresses specified when defining the deployment option. In addition, the query is forwarded to either the IP address of the DNS server assigned the Primary DNS deployment role for the object, or to the target interface specified when defining the Forwarder DNS deployment role. This is DNS zone forwarding.

To define a forwarding DNS deployment option:

  1. Navigate to the level at which you want to set the Forwarding DNS deployment option and select the Deployment options tab.
Note: The Deployment options tab appears at the configuration, view, zone, server, server group, IP block, and IP network levels.
  2. Select the Deployment options tab, then select New > DNS option.
  3. Under General, configure the following parameters:
    • Name—select Forwarding.
    • Disable forwarding for child zones—If required, select this checkbox. For more information, refer to Disabling forwarding for child zones.
    • Addresses—enter the IP address of the DNS server for forwarding queries and select the add icon (+). Repeat this step to add more addresses to the list. To remove an address from the list, select the remove icon (x) for the address.
  4. (Not applicable to server and server group levels) Under Servers, select the servers to which the option will apply:
    • All servers—applies the deployment option to all servers in the configuration.
    • Server group—applies the deployment option to a specific server group in the configuration. Select a server group from the drop-down menu.
    • Server—applies the deployment option to a specific server in the configuration. Select a server from the drop-down menu.
  5. In the Change control section, add comments if required.
  6. Select Create.
