Most errors that you encounter while using the Dynamic Update feature can be resolved by performing a regular DHCP deployment. You can refer to the BAM server logs and event logs for details on these errors.

Note: Dynamic Update takes longer as compared to the instant deployment for MAC pools. The 30 second delay for deployment is intentional to enable the DHCP reservation to be configured over multiple steps (without any partial changes) before being deployed on a BDDS.
This section provides solutions for specific errors:

Problem

Dynamic Update is enabled for the network but dynamic updates are not triggered.

Solution

For the Dynamic Update feature to work, ensure that the following conditions are met:
  • Bluecat Address Manager (BAM) and BDDS must be running the same version. In addition, Dynamic Update is only available on BDDS version 9.6 and greater, so, ensure that BDDS is running the supported version.
  • You must perform a regular DHCP deployment on DHCP server before using the Dynamic Update feature. If DHCP deployment is not successful, dynamic update is suspended until the next successful DHCP deployment.

Problem

Dynamic Update for DHCP reservations using Custom and Vendor options fails with the following error:

Unknown error: can't open object: parse error(s) occurred

Solution

Custom and Vendor options must be assigned and deployed (by performing a regular DHCP deployment) before they can be used as part of Dynamic Update. Once DHCP deployment is successful, you can perform Dynamic Update successfully.

Problem

When multiple DHCP reservations across different networks are associated with the same MAC address, performing a dynamic update results in the following error:

MAC address associated with more than 1 DHCP reservation, can't perform dynamic update

Solution

Dynamic update should not be used when multiple DHCP reservations across different networks are associated with the same MAC address.

To resolve this error, do one of the following:
  • If you do not want to use the Dynamic Update feature:

    1. Disable Dynamic Update for all networks on the corresponding DHCP server.
    2. Perform a regular DHCP deployment.
  • If you want to continue using the Dynamic Update feature:
    1. Update or delete DHCP reservations to ensure that the MAC address is associated with only one DHCP reservation.
    2. Perform a regular DHCP deployment.
