BlueCat Edge is a combination of components that interact with each other to form the Edge solution. The following image illustrates the interaction of these components:

Component Information
BlueCat Edge Customer Instance (CI)
  • Web-based interface for BlueCat Edge
  • Access point for BlueCat Edge data
  • Perform service and configuration management
  • Configure SSO integration
  • Configure Active Directory integration
Service Point v4 (SP)
  • Platform where Edge services are deployed
  • Deployed into your network based on your architecture
  • Handles all DNS client queries
Attention: BlueCat no longer supports Service Point v3 instances. You must migrate all Service Point v3 instances to Service Point v4 instances. For more information on migrating from Service Point v3 instances to Service Point v4 instances, refer to Migrating Service Point v3 to Service Point v4.
DNS resolver service (DRS)
  • Specialized DNS resolver and caching service
  • Applies DNS routing, security, discovery, and other policies on DNS query traffic
  • Logs all DNS query, action, and response information
    Note: The service point doesn't validate DNSSEC but will pass queries through to a DNS server.
Advanced Threat Service (ATS)
  • Optional service for detecting traffic using domains generated by Domain Generation Algorithm (DGA) technologies
Discovery Service Instance (DI)
  • Performs discovery of DNS configuration and data to automatically configure optimal resolution paths for all clients
  • Ensures Edge configuration is always up to date with infrastructure changes
Identity Service Instance (IS)
  • Uses Active Directory integration to match query/response logs with end-user identity
