For detailed information about administering BlueCat Address Manager and BlueCat DNS/DHCP Servers, refer to the Address Manager Administration Guide.
Prerequisites for creating virtual appliances on Equinix Network Edge:
- You must have a valid Equinix Network Edge Marketplace account.
- You must have a billing account with Equinix. For more information, see the Equinix Product Documentation.
- You must have a valid license from BlueCat.Note: BlueCat Equinix Virtual Appliances are BYOL (Bring Your Own License). You must obtain your BlueCat DNS and DHCP Server for Equinix licenses from BlueCat Customer Care. As part of the configuration while launching your virtual appliances, you will be required to provide a BlueCat Client ID and License Key. Contact your BlueCat sales representative with your Network Edge email ID(s) to obtain your client ID and license key.

Deployment Options | Single, Redundant |
There are two deployment types available for BlueCat DNS/DHCP Servers:
-
Single—Provision a single device that operates as a standalone device. Another single device can be paired with the existing single device (requires same resource configuration) to form a local redundancy (redundancy in single metro) or geo-redundancy (each device operates in different metro).
-
Redundant—Provision two devices. Each device operates individually, and you are responsible for configuring those in an Active-Active fashion. You have the option of deploying both devices in two different metros (recommended) to achieve distributed architecture, or keep both devices in the same metro.
Note: Equinix will configure the two devices on separate management planes in their environment to prevent any single-point of failure from affecting both devices.
Device Creation
To create a BlueCat Equinix virtual device:
-
Log in to the Network Edge Marketplace. If the Identity and Access Management (IAM) feature is enabled for your account, ensure that you switch to the intended Project Name/ID before proceeding to the device creation workflow.
-
On the BlueCat card, click Select and Continue to begin device creation.
Tip: Click View Details on the card to see a preview of the configuration options available for this virtual device. -
Under Deployment Type, select one of the following options:
- Single Device
-
Redundant Device—If you selected Redundant Device, select the Redundancy option. You can create a new pair of redundant devices, or add an additional (redundant) device to an existing device.
-
Click Begin Creating Edge Devices.
-
Under Location:
- In the Select Edge Device Location section, select a location.
-
In the Select Billing Account section, select a billing account from the Your accounts in this metro dropdown list.
Note: Metro selection is linked to your billing account country. For example, if you select Silicon Valley for the deployment metro, you must have a billing account in the United States. If you need to deploy the VNF to a different metro such as Tokyo, you must create a billing account in Japan. If you do not have a billing account for the selected metro, a message will be displayed, with an option to navigate to the Account Management page, where you can create a new billing account. Without selecting an account, you will not be able to create your device. For more information, see Billing Account Management in the Equinix Product Documentation.
-
Click Next: Device Details.
-
Under Device Details, the Connectivity option is set to Without Equinix Public IP Address and the Licensing option is set to Bring Your Own License.
-
In the Device Resources section, select the virtual machine Resource type, Software Package, and Software Version. See BlueCat DNS/DHCP Server VNF Specifications for more information.
-
In the Device Details section, configure the following fields:Note: If you selected the deployment type as Redundant Devices, you must also configure the fields related to the secondary device, similar to Single Device deployment.
Field Description Device Name The device name that is used to identify it in the portal. (Optional) Primary License Key Your license key. Primary Hostname The host name for the device. (Optional) Primary License ID The license ID. (Optional) Private Address The private IP address. (Optional) Private CIDR Mask The subnet mask. (Optional) Private Gateway The private gateway IP address. -
In the Interfaces section, keep the default number of interfaces available on the VNF.
-
In the Device Status Notifications section, enter the email addresses that should receive email notifications regarding device status. Optionally, you can select the Unique recipients for High Availability device check box to enter separate email addresses for primary and redundant devices.
Note: We strongly recommend adding multiple email addresses so that more than one user receives notifications for this device. You can enter a maximum of 5 email addresses. -
(Optional) In the Optional Details section, enter the Purchase Order Number and Order Reference/Identifier.
-
In the Term Length dropdown list, select a term length.
The corresponding Pricing Overview is displayed.
-
Click Next: Additional Services.
-
Under Additional Services, you can choose the device access options.
(Optional) To Set up SSH and RSA Public Keys, select the Set up SSH and RSA Public Keys (Optional) check box. You can enter an existing RSA Public Key, or click Add New RSA Public Key to generate a new one. See Network Edge Device Access in the Equinix Product Documentation for more information about generating an RSA public key.
-
Click Next: Review.
-
Review the details displayed. Then, review the Shared Support Structure and click the corresponding check box to acknowledge it. In the Terms and Conditions section, click Review and Accept Order Terms. In the Terms and Conditions pop-up displayed, review the order terms and select the I have read and understand these terms check box. Then, click Accept.
-
Click Create Virtual Device.
Your request is submitted. After the device is provisioned, the new device is displayed in the Inventory list (Network Edge > Virtual Device Inventory).
