In DDI orchestrator, you can create new DNS records for a zone. This page provides instructions on how to create a single DNS record.

Note: For instructions on importing DNS records in bulk, refer to Importing DNS records.

To create a new DNS record:

  1. On the DNS page, open the zone for which you want to create a new record.
  2. Select Create on the task bar.
  3. In the dialog, enter a name for the record and select the record type.

After selecting the type, the applicable fields for that type are automatically displayed.

Warning: If you save a new DNS record with the wrong type, you cannot change the type later. You must delete the record and create a new one with the correct type.
  4. Enter the required and any optional custom information:

    • If you're adding an A record, an autocomplete behavior helps find a free IP address in a network.
    • When you enter the first digits of a network address, DDI orchestrator displays a list of networks to choose from.
The Address field in the Create DNS record dialog provides a list of networks that match the digits you enter.
    • Select a network from the list and the Address field will be populated with the next free IP address from that network, along with an indicator of the address state: Free, Reserved, Claimed, or Assigned. It also displays insights for the selected IP address.

The Address field populated with an address with a Free indicator.
  5. Enter a Time-to-live (TTL), either in seconds or using the following shorthand notation:
    • 1s: 1 second

    • 1m: 1 minute

    • 1h: 1 hour

    • 1d: 1 day

    • 1w: 1 week

  6. Select Create now to save the new record to the zone.

IP address insights

Once you have entered/selected the IP address in the Address field while creating a new DNS record, DDI orchestrator displays insights about the address and related objects. These insights provide information about the IP address and can help you to better understand its state.

The Create DNS record dialog displays insights about the selected network.

To view information or a list of objects related to the network, hover over the (i) icon(s). The (i) icon displays the following information for each of these fields:

  • Network: The network containing the specified IP address. Hover to view more details about the network, such as type, AD site, etc.
    • Type can either be an IP address range or a DHCP scope.
  • Properties: All defined properties for the specified IP address, including custom properties.
  • DNS hosts: All defined DNS hosts for the specified IP address.
  • MAC address: Additional MAC information for the specified IP address, including the MAC address of the discovered device.
  • Last seen: The date on which the IP address was last seen, including additional information for the specified IP address.
