The BlueCat Server Update Services (BSUS) app organizes the DNS/DHCP Servers it manages into Server Batches. A Server Batch is a group of DNS/DHCP Servers that get the same updates from BSUS, in the same way, and at the same time. Server Batches can represent a single site, data center, or simply a group of servers that perform similar functions.

If you organized servers into Server Groups within Address Manager, you can import them as Server Batches in BSUS. Or, you can manually create a new Server Batch within BSUS, choosing from the DNS/DHCP servers available to BSUS.

BSUS applies upgrades and patches to servers within a Server Batch in parallel. You can also apply updates and patches to multiple Server Batches at once. This means you should avoid putting all members of a redundant service group into the same server batch. For example:

  • Don't put all authoritative DNS servers for a zone into the same batch. Doing so could cause a temporary DNS outage.

  • Don't put all DNS servers responsible for outbound recursion into the same batch.

  • Don't put both members of a DHCP failover pair into the same batch, unless your environment can tolerate a temporary DHCP outage for the affected networks.

Note:
  • A DNS/DHCP Server can belong to only one Server Batch.

  • If you apply updates or patches to multiple Server Batches, updates are applied to each batch in parallel.
