You can add different answers for different regions. Answers can be configured as either a set of fixed IP addresses or as a single FQDN. FQDN answers are recommended where the IP address of the answer might change, such as when using application load balancers in a public cloud.
Note: The DNS record is automatically deployed to DNS when the GSS configuration is added.

Adding new answers

To add a new IP address answer:
  1. Open the Global Server Selector configuration for the application.
  2. Select the Answers tab.
  3. Under Answers, click + and select Add IP Address Answer.
  4. Set the following parameters:
    • Servers—enter the FQDN or IP address of the regional server providing this application. If you enter an FQDN, GSS uses the current IP addresses assigned to the selected host.

Click + to add additional IP addresses. If multiple IP addresses are added, you must also enter a name.

    • Name(Optional) enter the name for this answer in the GSS configuration. If you entered an FQDN in the Server field, the name defaults to the first label of the FQDN. If no name is provided, the IP address of the answer is displayed.
Note: The name cannot contain a period character (.) to avoid confusion with FQDNs and IP addresses.
    • Region—enter the region in which the server resides. If you have linked answer regions to IP address ranges in Address Manager, the region might be select automatically.

  5. Click Add to add the answer or click Add Next to configure another answer.

Verifying the answer configuration

Once you have configured an answer, you can check the configuration and status in the Answers list.

When the answer is first configured, the initial state is down. You can use the Force Up action to activate the answer and bring it online. For more information, refer to Managing existing answers.

By default, GSS creates a Fallback answer during the initial setup. Access is diverted to the fallback answer when all other answers fail to respond. A fallback answer is denoted by the Fallback under the Region column. The Fallback answer does not have a health check.

Selecting the health-check region

When GSS displays the status of each answer, it shows the status recorded in the currently selected GSS region. If you have multiple GSS regions defined ,you can use select the health check region using the drop-down menu in the top-right corner of the application. The answer status column changes to show the status in the selected GSS region.
