The Triggers settings let you enable or disable Start
triggers and Stop triggers for the capture you
are configuring. Triggers are used to start or stop captures at a specified time or
network event. They are very useful for pinpointing the origins of intermittent network
problems. For example, you can set a start trigger so that the capture begins when a
problem occurs. Conversely, you can stop capturing when the problem occurs so that you
can see exactly what happened just prior to the observed symptom. Alternatively, if you
know that problems occur at a particular time, you can set a time event to begin
capturing packets during that time. Start and stop triggers can help you uncover many
hard-to-find network problems.
Important: The list of
filters for triggers are the filters from the LiveWire control point, not the
LiveWire RCE where the capture resides. You can only select filters for triggers for
this capture on the LiveWire RCE from the filters list on the LiveWire control
point.
To create and configure triggers:
- Select Start trigger to enable and configure a start trigger:
Note: When one or more start trigger event options are selected, capture starts when any of the trigger events occur.
- Time: Select to create a start trigger that starts a
capture when a user-specified time occurs. Here are the options for
setting a time trigger event:
- Absolute time: Select this option to set a specific time for the start trigger. Enter the time in the box.
- Use date also: Select this option to set a specific date for the start trigger. The start trigger is activated when both the date and absolute time occurs.
- Elapsed time: Select this option to set an elapsed time for the start trigger. Enter an interval defined in days, hours, minutes, and seconds. The count for a start trigger begins when you click the Start Trigger button in the capture window or otherwise start the trigger watch (for example, automatically in repeat mode).
- Filter: Select to configure a start trigger that
starts a capture whenever the selected filter event(s) occurs:
- Accept matching any: Select to start a capture whenever any of the selected filter event(s) occurs.
- Accept match all: Select to start a capture whenever all the selected filter event(s) occurs.
- Reject matching: Select to start a capture whenever none of the selected filter event(s) occurs.
Note: The trigger filters do not control what is captured, but only when the trigger occurs. The capture's filters control what is actually filtered. - Bytes captured: Select to configure a start trigger that starts a capture whenever the selected number of bytes configured is captured. Enter the number of bytes in the box.
- Notify: Select to send a notification of the selected severity when the start trigger event occurs. A notification is a message sent to announce and describe the occurrence of specified events on the network.
- Start capture: Select to start a capture when any of the start trigger event occurs.
- Time: Select to create a start trigger that starts a
capture when a user-specified time occurs. Here are the options for
setting a time trigger event:
- Select Stop trigger to enable a stop trigger.
- Time: Select to create a stop trigger that stops a
capture when a user-specified time occurs. Here are the options for
setting a time trigger event:
- Absolute time: Select this option to set a specific time for the stop trigger. Enter the time in the box.
- Use date also: Select this option to set a specific date for the stop trigger. The stop trigger is activated when both the date and absolute time occurs.
- Elapsed time: Select this option to set an elapsed time for the stop trigger. Enter an interval defined in days, hours, minutes, and seconds. The count for a stop trigger begins when you click the Start Trigger button in the capture window or otherwise start the trigger watch (for example, automatically in repeat mode).

a capture whenever the selected filter event(s) occurs:
- Accept matching any: Select to stop a capture whenever any of the selected filter event(s) occurs.

- Reject matching: Select to stop a capture whenever none of the selected filter event(s) occurs.
Note: The trigger filters do not control what is captured, but only when the trigger occurs. The capture's filters control what is actually filtered. - Bytes captured: Select to configure a stop trigger that stops a capture whenever the selected number of bytes configured is captured. Enter the number of bytes in the box.

Note: If you do not select Stop trigger, packet capturing started by a start trigger continues indefinitely until it is aborted manually by the user. - Time: Select to create a stop trigger that stops a
capture when a user-specified time occurs. Here are the options for
setting a time trigger event:
- Select Repeat to reset the start trigger each time the stop
trigger is activated. This option is only available when both Start
trigger and Stop trigger are selected. Note: Repeat mode allows you to capture multiple occurrences of the same event(s) with a single capture window.
