Once you have configured a virtual machine, you can move the virtual machine to a different host, datastore, or both. The migration seamlessly moves your virtual machine to a new set of resources without downtime.
Attention: The following steps have been validated on vSphere Client v6.7.0.

Before you begin

Before proceeding to migrate virtual machines using vMotion, ensure that the following are met:

Virtual machine requirements:
  • The virtual machine that you are moving must not have connections to a virtual device, such as a CD drive or floppy drive.
  • The virtual machine that you are moving must not have connections to internal vSwitch.
  • The virtual machine that you are moving must not have CPU affinity configured.
Host machine requirements:
  • The host that the virtual machine will be moved to must have a Gigabit ethernet connection.
  • The host that the virtual machine will be moved to must have access to the same physical networks as the virtual machine.
  • The host that the virtual machine will be moved to must have compatible CPU configurations with the virtual machine.
  • The host that the virtual machine will be moved to must have access to the same storage drives used by the virtual machine.

To migrate virtual machines using vMotion:

  1. Right click the name of an existing Address Manager or DNS/DHCP Server virtual machine and select Migrate....
  2. Under Select a migration type, select one of the following options and click Next:
    • Change compute resource only: Select this option to move your virtual machine to a new host or cluster.
    • Change storage only: Select this option to move your virual machine to a new datastore or datastore cluster.
    • Change both compute resource and storage: Select this option to move your virtual machine to a new host or cluster, and change the storage to a new datastore or datastore cluster.
  3. If you selected Change computer resource only:
    1. Under Select a compute resource, click the name of the new host, cluster, resource pool, or vApp to run the virtual machine and click Next.
    2. Under Select networks, select the name of the new destination network that will be used for the virtual machine migration and click Next.
    3. Under Select vMotion priority, select Schedule vMotion with high priority (recommended) to prioritize resources for this migration or select Schedule normal vMotion to prioritize resources for other migrations, and click Next.
  4. If you selected Change storage only:
    1. Under Select storage, select the format in which you want to store the virtual disk and select the name of the datastore for the virtual machine migration, and click Next.
  5. If you selected Change compute resource and storage:
    1. Under Select a compute resource, click the name of the new host, cluster, resource pool, or vApp to run the virtual machine and click Next.
    2. Under Select storage, select the format in which you want to store the virtual disk and select the name of the datastore for the virtual machine migration, and click Next.
    3. Under Select networks, select the name of the new destination network that will be used for the virtual machine migration and click Next.
    4. Under Select vMotion priority, select Schedule vMotion with high priority (recommended) to prioritize resources for this migration or select Schedule normal vMotion to prioritize resources for other migrations, and click Next.
  6. On the Ready to complete page, review the migration information and click Finish to start the migration.
    The migration process begins and your virtual machine beings migrating to the net of resources. You can view the progress of the migration in the Recent Tasks tab.
