Microsoft DHCP policies allow administrators to assign IP configurations based on specific client attributes, such as MAC address, vendor class, or user class. These policies can be applied at both the server or scope level to deliver customized settings like DNS servers, gateways, or lease durations to targeted devices. This enables more granular control over network behavior.

Note: To manage DHCP policies, you must have DHCP administrator privileges.

Adding a DHCP policy to a service

To add a DHCP policy to a service:

  1. On the Service management tab of the Admin page, locate the Microsoft DHCP service in the data grid.
  2. Use the Row ... menu to select Manage DHCP policy.
  3. In the dialog, select Add.

  4. Enter a Name for the policy and an optional Description. Then select Next.
  5. In the Conditions step, select Criteria from the dropdown and its Operator, e.g., Equal or Unequal.

  6. Enter Value(s) in the provided field and then select Add.
Note: Values for criteria other than User class and Vendor class should be entered as hexadecimal strings. Values for criteria other than the ones related to relay agent information (RAI) can contain multiple values, each of which can end with a wildcard (*).
  7. Select Next.
  8. In the DNS dynamic updates step, select from the following options to set up the DHCP server to automatically update authoritative DNS servers with the host (A) and pointer (PTR) records of DHCP clients. You can select multiple options.
    • Enable DNS dynamic updates according to the settings below:
      • Dynamically update DNS records only if requested by the DHCP clients -OR-
      • Always dynamically update DNS records
    • Discard A and PTR records when lease is deleted
    • Dynamically update DNS records for DHCP clients that do not request updates
    • Disable dynamic updates for DNS PTR records
  9. Select Next.
  10. In the DHCP options step, use the dropdown to add DHCP options and their values.
Tip: Use the User class dropdown to view and add custom DHCP options.
  11. Select Next.
  12. Review your configured DHCP policy in the Summary step. Then select Create.

If there are any errors in the configuration, e.g., missing information or incorrect value types, an error message is displayed. Use the Back buttons to return to the relevant step and adjust the configuration as needed.

Adding a DHCP policy to a scope

It's possible to add DHCP policies to a specific scope. The scope inherits any active DHCP policies defined on the related service. However, scope-level DHCP policies are evaluated and processed before server-level policies. This allows for more granular control, enabling you to override general server-level settings with more configurations specifically tailored to individual scopes.

To add a DHCP policy to a scope:

  1. On the Networks tab of the IPAM page, locate the DHCP scope in the data grid.
Tip: Use the DHCP scopes filter in the left sidebar to filter the grid to display only DHCP scopes.
  2. Use the Row ... menu to select Manage DHCP policy.
  3. In the dialog, select Add.

Any active DHCP policies defined on the service are displayed in the data grid at the bottom of the dialog. You cannot edit the server-level policies in this dialog. Refer to Adding a DHCP policy to a service above for instructions on adding DHCP policies to a service.

  4. Enter a Name for the policy and an optional Description. Then select Next.
  5. In the Conditions step, select a Criteria from the dropdown and its Operator, e.g., Equal or Unequal.

Select the Show inherited options checkbox to display the server-level DHCP policies as read-only.

Tip: Use the User class dropdown to view and add custom DHCP options.
  11. Select Next.
  12. In the IP ranges step, add or remove IP address ranges configured for the policy. Clients that match the policy conditions will be leased an IP address from the configured ranges.

    • To add a range: Enter a Start IP address and End IP address, and then select Add.
    • To remove a range: In the list of IP address ranges, select the IP address range and use the Row ... menu to select Remove.
  13. Select Next.
  14. Review your configured DHCP policy in the Summary step. Then select Create.

If there are any errors in the configuration, e.g., missing information or incorrect value types, an error message is displayed. Use the Back buttons to return to the relevant step and adjust the configuration as needed.

Editing DHCP policies

To edit an existing DHCP policy on a server/scope:

  1. To edit a server-level policy: navigate to the Service management tab of the Admin page and locate the DHCP service in the data grid.

To edit a scope-level policy: navigate to the Networks tab of the IPAM page and locate the DHCP scope in the data grid.

  2. Use the Row ... menu to select Manage DHCP policy.
  3. In the dialog, locate the policy you want to edit and use the Row ... menu to select Edit.
  4. Edit the policy as needed.
  5. When you've made the necessary changes, proceed to the Summary step and select Update.

Ordering DHCP policies

From the Manage DHCP policy dialog, you can define the order in which you want the DHCP policies on your service/scope to be processed.

To change the order of your service/scope's DHCP policies:
  1. On a service: On the Service management tab of the Admin page, locate the DHCP service in the data grid.

On a scope: On the Networks tab of the IPAM page, locate the scope in the data grid.

  2. Use the Row ... menu to select Manage DHCP policy.
  3. In the dialog, use the menu icons to drag and drop the policies into the desired order.

The system will process the policies in descending order.

Enabling or disabling a DHCP policy

It's possible to enable or disable a single DHCP policy on a service or scope. Enabling or disabling a DHCP policy does not enable/disable other DHCP policies defined on the same service/scope. To enable or disable all policies on the service/scope, refer to Activating or deactivating DHCP policies.

To enable or disable a DHCP policy:
  1. On a service: On the Service management tab of the Admin page, locate the DHCP service in the data grid.

On a scope: On the Networks tab of the IPAM page, locate the scope in the data grid.

  2. Use the Row ... menu to select Manage DHCP policy.
  3. In the dialog, locate the DHCP policy you want to disable and use the Row ... menu to select either Enable or Disable.

  4. In the confirmation dialog, select Yes.

When a DHCP policy is enabled, it State will change to Enabled.

When a DHCP policy is disabled, its State will change to Disabled.

Activating or deactivating DHCP policies

Micetro enables you to enable or disable all DHCP policies on a service or scope at once.

To activate or deactivate DHCP policies:
  1. On a service: On the Service management tab of the Admin page, locate the DHCP service in the data grid.

On a scope: On the Networks tab of the IPAM page, locate the scope in the data grid.

  2. Use the Row ... menu to select Manage DHCP policy.
  3. Select either Activate or Deactivate in the top right corner of the dialog.

All DHCP policies on the service/scope will be activated or deactivated. After deactivating policies, you can always reactivate them by selecting the Activate button, which is displayed when the policies are deactivated.
