Service points perform updates in a serial format, where service points will update one by one. During the service point update, they will continue to process query information, resulting in no downtime.

When the service point version of a site is updated as a result of an automatic update across all sites or a manual update of selected sites, the service points deployed from those sites recognize that an update is available on the next periodic poll to the BlueCat Edge Cloud. The service point then retrieves the update from the BlueCat Edge Cloud and serially begin to perform an update to the new service point version.

The service point update settings allow you to control whether service points are automatically updated with each new service point version release. By default, service points are configured to automatically update.

If you disable automatic service point updates, all service points will remain at their current service point version and must be updated manually through each site. With this capability, you can update service points associated to a test site to verify that the newer service point updates don't break existing functionality before rolling out the update to the rest of your organization. You also have greater flexibility to roll out service point updates during a controlled maintenance window.
Note: Service points that operate on older versions of software might not be able to consume the latest features available in the BlueCat Edge Cloud. By default, the BlueCat Edge Cloud will continue to support at least two service point versions. BlueCat will notify you when service point versions are going out of support to ensure that you have time to validate the latest service point versions.

If your service point version falls outside of the supported service point versions, your service point might not function as expected or successfully update to a newer service point version. You can also no longer deploy new service points from the site that is running the unsupported service point version. BlueCat recommends running the latest service point version to ensure that all features function as expected on the service point.
