BlueCat Cloud DNS (formerly known as "BlueCat External DNS Hosted Services" and "Proteus Cloud Service") fully integrates internal and external DNS with centralized IP Address Management (IPAM), providing customers with the simplicity of a single interface and vendor to manage all of their IP and DNS needs on one of the most reliable DNS networks available. Customers can deploy domains to the cloud DNS service using BlueCat Address Manager, while managing a write copy of these domains on a BlueCat DNS server that resides on premises. Leveraging this integration can help customers manage their external DNS, save capital and operational expenses, improve efficiency, and ensure that they have the most resilient DNS infrastructure available.
To begin, the user creates an unmanaged server in Address Manager with the server profile BlueCat Cloud DNS using the credentials received from BlueCat. Once created, the server can be assigned multiple Secondary deployment roles on multiple DNS zones managed by Address Manager. On the first deployment, Address Manager creates the secondary zones in the cloud DNS environment. Immediately after first deployment, secondary servers in the cloud DNS environment pull the content of the zones by means of a full zone transfer (AXFR) from the primary DNS server in the customer's premises. Further changes in a primary zone are delivered by means of an incremental zone transfer (IXFR) to the secondaries in the cloud DNS environment.
