BlueCat recommends configuring the xHA backbone connection on the xHA interface (eth1) through the user interface when adding a DNS/DHCP Server to Address Manager, or when creating an xHA pair. If configuring through the Administration Console, eth1 must be configured before adding the DNS/DHCP Server server, as interfaces cannot be altered from the Admistration Console while under Address Manager control.

You need to perform the procedure for both Active and Passive nodes in the xHA pair.

Note: The IP address of the xHA Backbone Connection must be on a different subnet than eth0. If Dedicated Management is enabled, the IP address of the xHA backbone must be on a different subnet that the Service interface and the Management interface. This is the recommended best practice for direct xHA Backbone connections and connections over switches or wide area networks (WAN). In addition, if the DNS/DHCP Servers are not connected by a direct ethernet xHA backbone connection, the xHA interfaces should be separated onto a different LAN segment to prevent the xHA interfaces from receiving layer-2 broadcast traffic intended for other interfaces. This can be achieved by separate VLANs for each interface, private networks (for virtual appliances), or separate physical switches. For information and help on running xHA with switches, contact BlueCat Customer Care at https://care.bluecatnetworks.com.

To set the xHA Backbone Connection:

  1. Log in to the DNS/DHCP Server Administration Console as the administrator. For more information on default login credential, refer to BlueCat default login credentials (you must be authenticated to view this topic).
  2. From Main Session mode, type configure interfaces and press ENTER.
  3. Type modify eth1 and press ENTER.
  4. Type set address <ipv4address/CIDR> or set address <ipv6address/CIDR> and press ENTER.
  5. Type save and press ENTER. The Administration Console saves your settings.
  6. Type exit and press ENTER until you return to Main Session mode.
  7. Return to the Address Manager user interface and edit the xHA pair, making sure to enter the same IP addresses and netmasks/prefixes you set on the DNS/DHCP Servers. For complete details, refer to Editing an xHA pair.
